FFA sponsor Brooke Petty states: "This group of Freshmen did an incredible job yesterday at our District Novice Conduct of Chapter Meetings contest, which includes some memorization of opening/closing ceremonies and then a full meeting using proper parliamentary procedure. The top 2 teams from each room moved on to finals to determine final placings and State Qualifiers. After getting through some initial nerves, they made it into finals and eventually placed 1st! Please congratulate them on their hard work if you see them this week!"

Greater Salina Community Foundation came out and presented their Scholarship Bootcamp to Seniors. They do a great job of going over scholarship dos and don'ts, how to find scholarships, resume building, letters of recommendation, writing a personal statement/essay, and I love how the emphasize thank you cards. At the conclusion of the presentation seniors put their names into a drawing for a $1000 scholarship. This years winner is Daniel Kejr! The Library gave away some pretty rad books this week. These two students won our Wimpy Kid trivia game (3rd-12th graders participated) and snagged themselves a copy of Jeff Kinney's newest book, No Brainer! Thanks for playing, everyone!

The superintendent kicks of the blood drive this morning. SES students help organize donors and the students and staff contribute in this vital way to our community. If you would like to be on the list for future dates you can contact the school as outside donors are welcome.

SES freshman had their College Tour at Fort Hays State University. First, we met with our college admissions representative, Devan Fleglar about the admission process and what FHSU had to offer our students. Next, we had a tour that included: academic buildings, a typical classroom, the fine arts building, the library, a dinosaur, two different dorms, their union, and McMindes Cafe. You will be proud to know that the Trojans emptied the ice cream machine not once, but TWICE. It was a big treat!! We concluded our day with a driving tour of campus and the town. Freshmen were left with information on how having a good GPA can affect their scholarships. You can check out FHSU Freshman Merit Scholarships at this link: https://www.fhsu.edu/admissions/scholarships/freshmen

Salina Tech Recognized as One of Top 150 Colleges in U.S. Such a blessing to have this resource in our back yard. We are having multiple students every year graduate high school with industry certificates from SATC and even a couple with associates degrees completed in HS. https://salina311.com/salina-tech-recognized-as-one-of-top-150-colleges-in-u-s/ Salina Tech Recognized as One of Top 150 Colleges in U.S.

We had another author/illustrator visit today! Lauren Castillo is the author of several books that we got to listen to today including Nana in the City. She is also an illustrator for her own books and for several other authors. She told us that she has to practice a lot until she really likes her final product for the book. We even got to learn how to illustrate Nana's Cat like she does in her book. Ask your kiddos what they thought of the author visit.

I would like to provide some additional information regarding the incident Thursday morning and apologize that communication from the district was not more timely and effective. There was a report of a threat late Wednesday night that went through our School Resource Officer which launched an investigation by the sheriff’s department. This threat was of a school shooting that would happen on Thursday and came from a social media account of an existing high school student. I want to thank the student or students that reported the messages to Officer Long. It was determined that the student who owned the account did not post the message; his account had been hacked. The investigation continued through the night in an attempt to determine who was at fault. We were given the all clear from law enforcement Thursday morning that school could be safely held. We worked with the Sheriff’s department to have an increased presence on campus for reassurance and extra precaution. A message was then sent out to parents to let everyone know that we were aware of the threat but school would continue as appropriate precaution had been taken. A second message was sent out about 9:00 am with a longer explanation. The Salina Post also released an article about the incident. It is important to note that the Southeast student was a victim in this incident and no Southeast individual is suspected for being involved. We do not know if the intent of the social media hack and posted threat was to hurt this student or to cause a disruption to the district but the Sheriff’s department determined there was no intent to follow through with any attack at Southeast. I should have been more reassuring and clear with my original messaging and for that I apologize again. I want to thank Officer Long and the Sheriff’s department for working through the night on the investigation to determine it was safe for us to have school on Thursday. In this case the threat was a hoax but until we investigate we cannot be sure so it is vitally important that we are made aware of any possible situation that could endanger our school and the students and staff therein. We have exceptional students and thanks to them we were able to confidently continue with our day.
