Parking Lot update: Thank you to everyone this morning as the drop off and pick up went very smoothly. Tomorrow we shift to the central section. Once again, it should not disrupt drop off or pick up but it will significantly impact available parking spaces. Faculty should plan to park around back. Please do not park in the Wednesday section.

Congratulations to these SES students for winning the VFW Essay Contests! In the Grades 6-8 "Patriots Pen" division, top placing 8th graders were (left to right): Faith Swank (1st), Lacey Nelson (2nd), Haydon Carbon (3rd) and 7th grader Aryana Burge (4th) at the local level. In this division students must write an essay and this year's essay theme was “How Can I be a Good American?” They received $100, $75, $50, and $25 from VFW representatives alongside their certificates last week. In the HS division, SES seniors Hart Nurnberg and Ben Monday entered the "Voice of Democracy" competition also sponsored by the VFW. This contest involves recording a 3-5 minute audio essay. The theme in the HS division this year was "America: Where Do We Go From Here?" Hart took second place locally ($200), and Ben took first place to win $250.

First Forensics meet
Crack repair will start on Tuesday creating some disruption to our parking lot for the remainder of this week. On Tuesday the western section of the lot will be closed. Parents and buses will be able to circle around to the east and west upon entry to drop off students at the front of the building. However, the parking slots in the section marked Tuesday will be closed for the day.

parking lot disruption
There will be some major disruptions to the traffic flow and parking at Southeast of Saline the week of Feb 7. Contractors will be on campus to repair cracks to the parking lot. Sections of the lot will be closed to parking Tuesday through Friday. We will try to keep the traffic flow consistent but parking will be challenging. Look for updates next week as the project progresses.

From Mrs. Swank: I was so proud of our school. We won all the local VFW Patriot's Pen awards! I was talking to one of the ladies there and she was so impressed with our school and the essays submitted this year and so many previous years. Mrs. Schoenfeld does such a great job encouraging our students to submit. There were 2 high school and 4 junior high winners. I was there because Faith got first place in the junior high! She won $100! Their essays go onto the state and possibly national level. It was a proud moment to see SES kiddos with such love for our country in such a difficult time. 💜

You can put this under “it takes a village”, board members and teachers have helped out this week in the kitchen so our doors could stay open and our kids fed. Thank you to everyone that pitched in this week as we dealt with staff absences throughout the district.

Lunch with children: Starting on Tuesday, January 18, parents will be able to schedule a day to eat lunch with their child at school provided that an alternate table or room is available for the day requested. All efforts will be made to accommodate requests but limitations will exist and flexibility on possible dates is appreciated. Elementary School entry: Elementary students who are dropped off at school will no longer walk to the west playground entrance in the morning. Students may now be dropped off at the North Entrance and begin entering the building once the first bus releases their passengers. This is typically between 7:50 and 7:55 a.m. Parents should continue to utilize the front row of parking spaces and be mindful of stopping in areas that might block a bus from reaching its designated slot.

Mr. Schoenfeld
Southeast of Saline is experiencing an increase in illness related absences. The board of education met tonight to discuss the situation. We ask that all parents be diligent with following protocols, including performing self checks and staying home if ill. The school will emphasize hand washing and cleaning. Although masks are optional, with the increase in illness it is worth considering again, even if for a short time. Covid is certainly a part of the current illness spike but we are also seeing other communicable illnesses such as Influenza A. The only way to ensure it does not spread is to keep it out of the building. Please keep children at home if they have symptoms. The level of illness is higher in the secondary than the elementary at this point. We are concerned the growth of illness over the last few days will disrupt school and we ask for your assistance in addressing the health and welfare of our students. Thank you for your efforts to keep SES safe and in school.
